South Korea Bans All Fish Imports From Prefectures Around Fukushima

South Korea began enforcing a new ban Monday on all Japanese fisheries products from Fukushima prefecture and seven surrounding prefectures. This follows sharply rising public concern among South Koreans over hundreds of tons of radioactive water leaking into the sea from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant in recent months.

The measure is expected to badly hurt Japan’s fisheries sector, since Seoul is one of Tokyo’s biggest importers of fish. The neighbors are separated by relatively small seas where they both fish, and they often eat the same fish and fisheries products. But while right now, it is only Japan’s fish industry that is hurting from the leaks at Fukushima, in time, South Korea’s could also be reeling as well.
