BRICS Nations Recognize Iran’s Inalienable Right To A Peaceful Nuclear Program

BRICS - peaceful nuclear program

With Iran’s nuclear talks at a decisive crossroads, the BRICS group of emerging powers says Tehran has an inalienable right to a peaceful nuclear program.

The BRICS countries also say there’s no alternative to a negotiated solution to the Iranian nuclear issue. The countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, made the statement in a declaration adopted at their summit meeting in the Brazilian city of Fortaleza.

The support came as Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany are negotiating for a final solution to their dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program. The BRICS countries welcomed what they called the positive momentum generated by the talks which they encouraged to continue in order to achieve a comprehensive and long-lasting solution.

What is important to remember is that by signing the Nuclear-Non Proliferation Treaty, the United States also recognized Iran’s right to a peaceful nuclear program. By using the threat of military action to coerce Iran to surrender their rights under that treaty, it is the United States that is in violation of international law.
