Thom Hartmann: Libertarian Economics Responsible For ‘Lost Generation’

libertarian economics

I am generally very appreciative of Thom Hartmann’s staunch anti-war stance and his overall rationality and intelligence, but this is a completely insane and baseless argument.

When has there been a Libertarian in power? Reaganomics and Libertarianism are not the same thing. How does a Conservative Keynesian like Reagan get compared to Liberal Austrian ideals? How do you blame the Libertarian party for policies enacted by Republicans and Democrats and two or three independents?

Last time I checked, it was Democrats and Republicans that deregulated our economy and allowed corporations to bring our country to what it is today. Where do Libertarian economics from their independent candidates come into play?

The student loan crisis is also a crisis invented by government. It is government that backs the loans that allows anyone to go into tens of thousands of dollars into debt for any degree. Libertarians, while growing rapidly, are not a decisive force in our government.

The Big Picture

I was an active member of the Libertarian Party when Reagan was elected. I was appalled to see the Republicans hijack cherry-picked tidbits of libertarian terminology, twist them around for their own fascist agenda, and give people like Thom Hartmann an excuse to bad-mouth Libertarians decades later. I’m still waiting for any semblance of libertarian policy to enter our government’s behavior.

Wait a minute. Since when has everything been “deregulated”? Regulations are growing by the year. They are MASSIVELY higher than in the distant past.
